Kubrick’s film A Clockwork Orange (1971), which he adapted himself from the 1963 novel of the same name by Anthony Burgess, was set in England’s not-too-distant future. Kubrick’s rendering of this world was visually stunning, and he cast Malcolm McDowell as the violence-addicted teenage hoodlum who is caught and reprogrammed in a horrifying fashion by the government.
