Between 1861 and 1865, more than 10,000 battles and engagements were fought across the continent, from Vermont to the New Mexico Territory, and beyond. The Civil War ended in Spring, of 1865, when Robert E. Lee surrendered the last major Confederate army to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865. However, the last battle was fought at Palmito Ranch, Texas, on May 13, 1865.
