Designed by Betty Willis and sold to Clark County in 1959, the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign is a 25-foot-tall sign that sits in the median of Las Vegas Boulevard, approximately four miles south of the Las Vegas city limits. The Sign welcomed visitors on what was the only road in from Los Angeles and soon had tourists posing for pictures and even performing marriage ceremonies beneath it. The south side of the Sign displays the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Nevada” in different sizes and styles, while the north side reads “Drive Carefully Come Back Soon” in a similar display of various sizes and styles. Willis never copyrighted the Sign and has referred to it as “my gift to the city,” allowing the image to be freely reproduced on everything from magnets to t-shirts to food.
