There have been 57 African-American women who have served in Congress. The first African-American woman elected to Congress, Shirley Chisholm of New York, won the election to the House in 1968. In total, 423 women have served in Congress—381 in the House of Representatives; 59 in the Senate; 17 women have served in both chambers. Currently, 153 serve in Congress—128 in the House and 25 in the Senate.
